Level 4 Business Management Courses: 40 or 120 Credits

Click College offers two Level 4 Business Management courses: a focused 40-credit Professional Diploma and a broader 120-credit Higher International Certificate. The Professional Diploma suits learners seeking a shorter introduction or targeted professional development. The Higher International Certificate suits those seeking a more comprehensive foundation in business and a route towards further study.

Level 4 Business Management courses: 40 or 120 credits, with a professional online-study setting.

Both options are studied online, but choosing between them involves more than comparing qualification titles. The main difference is the amount and breadth of learning.

Typical durations are guides, not deadlines. Students are in control of their own learning and progress through their course at their own pace – perfect for fitting in around existing commitments.

What is the difference between level and credits?

A qualification’s level describes the complexity and demand of the learning. Its credits describe the volume of learning. Two qualifications can therefore be at the same academic level while differing substantially in size. The Quality Assurance Agency’s credit framework distinguishes these two measures explicitly.[1]

Here, both courses are Level 4. The Higher International Certificate has three times the credit volume of the Professional Diploma, but it is not three academic levels higher. It provides more study at the same level across a wider range of business subjects.

Click College describes the 120-credit Higher International Certificate in Business Management as academically comparable to the first year of an undergraduate business degree. The 40-credit Professional Diploma represents one-third of that credit volume, rather than a complete first year.

When is the 40-credit Professional Diploma the better fit?

The Professional Diploma covers Business Environment & Organisations and People & Teamwork in Organisations. It offers a focused starting point for learners interested in how businesses operate and how people contribute to organisational performance.

A shorter programme may suit someone returning to education, exploring business management before committing to a larger qualification, or studying alongside demanding work responsibilities.

For example, an employee taking on additional team responsibilities may want structured business learning without immediately committing to six units. The Professional Diploma in Business Management (EduQual Level 4) offers a smaller initial study commitment while retaining the option to explore further qualifications later.

When is the 120-credit Higher International Certificate the better fit?

The Higher International Certificate in Business Management (EduQual Level 4) includes the two subjects above and extends study into Marketing Fundamentals & Customer Insight, Introduction to Operations & Business Processes, Foundations of Business Finance, and an optional unit.

That wider coverage is useful when the learner’s goal extends beyond a focused introduction. Someone seeking to understand how different business functions work together may benefit from studying people, customers, processes and finance within one programme.

For example, a prospective business owner may value the broader foundation, while a learner already planning further business study may prefer to begin with the larger programme.

The choice is therefore not simply “short course versus long course”. It is whether focused learning or a wider business foundation best supports the learner’s immediate purpose.

How does online study work?

Both courses have an open-access route and provide one-to-one tutor support. Learning is asynchronous: there are no live classes to attend, fixed schedules or assignment deadlines. Assessment is through written coursework rather than examinations, and enrolment is available throughout the year.

This flexibility allows study to fit around existing commitments. It still requires independent reading, engagement with learning materials and time to prepare assignments. Learners should choose a course size that fits their available study time as well as their ambitions.

Can the 40 credits count towards further study?

The Professional Diploma provides a potential starting point within Click College’s wider Business Management pathway. Its course page confirms that credits can be carried forward into relevant higher programmes. Learners should confirm the applicable credit transfer, remaining units and progression fees before changing programmes.

The wider pathway includes the Higher International Diploma in Business Management at Level 5, with 240 credits in total, followed by the International Graduate Diploma in Business Management at Level 6, with 360 credits in total. These totals incorporate earlier stages rather than being additional credits at each step.

Transfer to another education provider is a separate decision. Each receiving institution determines which previous learning it accepts and what admission conditions apply.[1]

Which Level 4 Business Management course should a learner choose?

The 40-credit Professional Diploma in Business Management is the more focused option for a manageable introduction, targeted development or an initial step back into study.

The 120-credit Higher International Certificate in Business Management is the broader option for learners seeking knowledge across the main business functions and a substantial foundation for further study.

The important choice is the learning commitment and coverage needed—not whether the award is called a diploma or certificate. In this particular comparison, the certificate is the larger qualification.

Learners considering other levels can also explore the complete range of Business Management courses.
